NH-Sport

Sports activities are becoming increasingly relevant to the way people in Germany shape their lives. Surveys show that around 72 percent of men and 65 percent of women do sport at least once a week. One eighth of the German population is a member of one of the approximately 8,500 fitness studios and almost 28 million people keep physically fit by taking part in sports activities in clubs.

Directly related to this is a high consumption of sporting goods, which is not limited to textiles and shoes, but in a broader sense also includes sports equipment and sports nutrition as well as food supplements. The sales figures of the local sporting goods industry also show a clear growth trend: in 2016, around 25 billion euros were generated, plus one billion euros for food supplements.

The "National Programme for Sustainable Consumption" adopted by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in 2016 shows that the field of sport represents an important field of transformation and, as a broad cross-cutting theme, provides a wide range of references for achieving the global sustainability goals (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs).

The project "NH-Sport - Analysis of Development Potentials of Sustainability in the Sporting Goods Industry" aims to strengthen the potential of sporting goods for a sustainable social development. In addition, the negative environmental impacts of consumption and production within the sporting goods industry are to be reduced by introducing relevant actions. Within the framework of the project, workshops are held with both consumers and industry representatives, surveys on purchasing behaviour are conducted and recommendations for action to consumers and politicians are formulated.
